A Tale of Two Cities

Leaving Prague by train at night and waking up to a winter morning in Warsaw's Zachodnia station is enough to make even the most patriotic Pole, or fervent Polophile, a bit embarassed..

That photo reminds me of two other cities: Dresden (1994) and Milton Keynes (UK, 2004.)

The trashing of Austro-Habsburg Krakow is more concerning. The ripping away of the trees from the Blonia and a new Hollywood Path of Fame including a star of Michael Jackson, whose seminal contribution to Krakow's ancient role as cultural capital of Poland was to play live in concert after he was dead. See blog for more details and one heck of a rant.

Please, please have a laugh at this The PNN is meant to be serious about "German expansionism" and in the year of the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Grunwals, though the medieval battle re-enactment is Monty Pythonesque.

To: Krakov's New Dragon's...I greatly enjoyed that blog you mentioned. It's an excellent piece of writing because it expresses so well the completely understandable outrage with a place of great culture and history being used as nothing more than a background for ignorant tourists to treat with indifference. Michael Jackson was an (unpunished) child molester who could once sing and dance very well. He is even respected by some (younger) people here in Spain. It is unbelievable. The "girls in Zywiec T Shirts" reminded me of those living human mannequins in Kubrick's awful "Eyes Wide Shut" film: ready to serve like fleshy robots. In the town where I live not far from Barcelona there even a cinema named in Kubrick's honour! The world picks some strange people to make heroes of.

Czarny. If possible can you translate this link if you don't weep too much in the process.

@Brett: I've never been to either Dresden or Milton Keynes but the fact that you compare the pic of Prague with a city destroyed by the RAF, and the pic of Europe's grimmest train station with a town built in the 1960s says a lot about the standards of architecture and building in the 1960s.

@Karl: Good rant but I don't understand one thing-- how did MJ play a live concert after his death??

I'll have a quick look at the link now and try and translate it Tuesday or Wednesday.

Well, he was "live" through the screen and the music even if physically dead as the music could exist without him as the show went on. Thanks for the translation. You'll get a bottle of a good wine at Xmas or more for this.....

But then you remember why so much of Warsaw is a dump, and why Prague isn't, and you cheer up considerably/feel embarassed for the Czechs.
